Southwyck House aka Brixton Barrier Block. Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London.
I passed it on a walk to Brixton with my flatmate and asked what it was. I wasn’t terribly shocked to find it was an estate. He and I snuck in and discovered it was as cold and intimidating on the inside as it was outside. It quite literally looks like almost prison I’ve had the misfortune of entering, and with locked off wings/blocks it operates just like one.
With all of the vitriol against certain people (Muslims, blacks, Eastern Europeans, poor folks of all colors) that seems to be swirling around London and this country in general, it seems no one realizes this is type of thing operates as self-fulfilling prophecy.
Children born on these estates and housing projects across the world know no other homes. How does one expect that people who for the duration of their lives are treated like prisoners even when they are “free”, should somehow develop into adults who assent to the so-called “values” and “morals” the mainstream world claims to cherish.
Self-fulfilling prophecies, vicious cycles, most seem to have a deleterious on the human psyche, but I think that’s evident from the headline.
