So for the majority of my time on this planet my old man has worked at Villanova University. Depending on who you are you may know that Villanova is something of a hoops powerhouse. As a basketball mad kid, that was naturally exciting for me and I tried to squeeze as many Wildcat related extra-curriculars out of my pops affiliation, as I possibly could. Naturally.
One of the first games I ever went to was Villanova/St.Johns during the Felipe Lopez era, St.Johns had on these uni’s, I hated them at the time pretty much because I hated anything that had to do with any Big East team aside from the home team. In hindsight they’re pretty hard. Anyway, SJU lost but Felipe still scorched Villanova and I’ll never forget listening to the commentators later on making all sorts of quasi-racist puns about Lopez’ “red hot” performance and his “tropical” origins, “tangoing allover the competition” (Lopez was from the Dominican Republic). Even as a dumb kid I thought they were corny as shit.
